AOCs

As of 2011, Cefalicchio’s vineyards fall within two different Puglia appellations: the Castel del Monte DOC and the Moscato di Trani DOC. The first is largely based on the Nero di Troia grape variety, while the second – as the name implies – is based on the Moscato bianco, a variety traditionally found in the area north of Bari, and on the sweet or liqueur-like wines derived from it.

Until 2010, Cefalicchio belonged to the Rosso Canosa DOC which, in 2011, merged with the Castel del Monte DOC. This implies that Cefalicchio wines will feature the Rosso Canosa DOC until the 2010 vintage and the Castel del Monte DOC from 2011 on.

As of 2011, some of the wines belonging to the Castel del Monte DOC – notably, Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva, Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva e Castel del Monte Bombino Nero – have been granted the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). Cefalicchio wines will be entitled to make use of DOCG after five years of experimentation.
